A baby goat and a new life
Gerthrude is from Burundi, a country in central Africa. She had to leave her home because of a war there. She had no food, her children were ill and she had no money for medicine.
Gerthrude and her friends asked a local group that Christian Aid works with for help. Each of the women was loaned a goat. The families were able to drink the goats' milk which was good for them. The goats produced manure which helped the families to grow more food. The food fed the families and they could sell some too, to make money. So a few little goat went quite a long way!
When the goats had babies, Gerthrude and her friends gave one back to the group, and these were loaned to other families. So even more people were helped
Goats galore!
Goats are at work in a rainforest in Bolivia! A community of people has been given 20 female goats and one male goat. The deal is that the people will give them back once 80 baby goats have been born.
Edith and her husband love having the goats. Their children work hard to fetch water for them after school. They have been taught other ways to look after the goats, too.
'When one of the goats was ill, we were able to cure it. It had a chest infection and was all swollen. We could make it better because of the training we had been given,' says Edith.
