Abdel's story

Abdel is 10 and he lives in Afghanistan, in Central Asia. There has been fighting in Afghanistan for most of the last 20 years, so . it has very few roads, hardly any electricity and few schools or hospitals. On top of all that, there has also been a drought in Afghanistan for the last three years. Crops haven't grown because there has been so little rain. Most people don't have enough food to eat or water to drink.

Abdel lost his home when Afghanistan was bombed in 2001. His whole village was destroyed and he and his family had to move to another part of the country where they would be safe. Every morning, Abdel and his brothers and sisters have just one piece of bread each to last them all day. 'I have a third for breakfast, a third for lunch and a third for dinner,' he says. 'I start lunch hungry and I finish hungry.'

Even though he is hungry, Abdel is helping to make his country safer. Lots of landmines were left in the ground after the war. If someone steps on a landmine, it will explode and could kill or injure them. Abdel has been trained to spot mines. 'If we see a mine, we mark it with a bush or a rock,' he says. 'Then we go and tell the people who clear mines what we have found and they can get rid of it.'
