Timothy's story

Hi! My name is Timothy. I'm 14 and I live near Accra in Ghana. My Dad, Mathias, used to be a farmer, growing cassava and maize on land that we rented from a landlord. But the landlord decided to put the rent up and we couldn't afford to keep the land. Dad found it very hard to grow enough food for our family to eat. We began to go hungry, but fortunately my Dad heard about a new type of food.

A local organisation was training people to breed snails. These are giant snails that grow up to 20cm long! My Dad started off with about 170 snails and looked after them well to make sure they had lots of babies. He now has about 6,000 snails in a special snail house. I help him to take care of them. I feed them with dandelion leaves and eggshells and sweep out the snail house. I give them water and wash their feeding trays every morning.

Snails are very good for you and they taste nice! We are also able to sell some of the extra snails and get enough money so that I can go to school. Our snails are pretty special!

A?4U When did you last try a new food? Why not try and taste something new every term?
