What, no bus?

Just because you walk to school doesn't mean it's down the road…

Fakhridin, 12, is from Tajikistan, a country in Asia. Many children in Tajikistan do farming jobs, working on the land. Some spend about two hours' farming in the morning before they go to school at 8am! It can take Fakhridin longer just to get to school.

'Sometimes the bus doesn't come. I often have to walk and it takes me three hours,' he says. 'I ask people for lifts but they say no.'

Walking for so long every day isn't much fun. But Tajikistan is an amazing country if you like going for trips in the mountains. Fakhridin belongs to a club run by a group called Zumrad. It's for children who haven't got much money, or have no parents. He can learn English and computing there, and the children also get to go on camping trips in the mountains. Fakhridin loves animals and wildlife. Every day he looks after hens, rabbits and pigeons. He feeds them and cleans their pens. His favourite is his black dove. 'I feed my birds every day, and let them go and fly. When I want them to come back, I let the black one go and the others come back,' he explains. If only getting to school and back was this easy!
