Surviving Hurricane Mitch

When Hurricane Mitch ripped through Central America in November 1998, at speeds of up to 155 miles an hour, children's lives were devastated

What is life after Mitch like?

Many people in Nicaragua and Honduras lost their brothers, sisters or parents - they were either drowned in the terrible floods, or killed, and 10,000 went missing, and are probably dead.

Over three years on, re-building work is still going on. Global Gang met up with some of these children, to find out what life after Mitch is like.

Marlini, 13, from Nicaragua

Marleni, 13, from Nicaragua, rides to and from school on her horse. She travels alone over mountain trails whatever the weather, and each journey takes her an hour! Her school roof collapsed during Hurricane Mitch and all the children had to work out of doors, under the trees, until a new roof was built with money from Christian Aid. Now the children can have lessons inside again. Marleni says she wants to be a teacher when she grows up!
