Flooding in Mozambique – fishing on a footy pitch!

After a few months the floodwaters went down in many areas, but a lot of damage was left behind.

People were able to move from emergency work, dealing with the immediate problems caused by the floods, to long-term rebuilding work. Houses, roads and sewage pipes needed repairing and rebuilding. It was important to work hard and fast because the rainy season was on the way – and that meant even more rain to come!

In many towns though, such as Chokwe, it was harder to get started because large areas were still under water. The football pitch was a lake, still completely covered by floodwater.

People in Mozambique have been getting organised so that if any more floods come, they'll know what to do. Primary school teachers now also work as flood monitors. They watch the water levels in the river and pass on warnings to their communities. The government has given them radios, bicycles and motorbikes, so they can find out what is happening and pass the news on. Posters explaining how to prepare for a flood have also been handed out.
