Vijay went to north India

My chance to go in style

About Vijay

Vijay, 11, is from Leeds. He is a Sikh and is really interested in the history of his religion. He went to a town called Amritsar, in north India, where some of his dad's family live. It was the festival of Baisakhi, the main Sikh holiday, so there were thousands of people visiting the Golden Temple at the same time.

Vijay's diary

I have always wanted to go to India. I jumped for joy when I heard I'd been picked. Here was my chance to go in style!

Tuesday 9 April
Wow! My first time. (On a plane I mean, not being filmed!) The take-off was very exciting. The buildings became smaller and smaller until we were in the clouds. When we arrived in Delhi, the heat really hit us, it was like walking into a sauna.

Wednesday 10 April
We had a lie-in and a full English breakfast. This is a rarity in India, because you can't get hold of bacon and sausages easily in smaller towns and cities.

Thursday 11 April
An early start today ? we had a seven-hour journey ahead of us. It was seriously hot ? about 40? C. We visited some villages and I saw a tree that was over 1,000 years old.

Check out the tree.

I met a boy called Randeep who showed me around his home and he also showed me his schoolbooks. He studies a number of languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Sanskrit and English. I also went to the village hall where some boys showed me how to play kabaddi ? a bit like a cross between rugby and wrestling. Then I played the drum while other children sang songs.
