Flooding in Mozambique

Three years ago, Mozambique was hit by heavy rains and terrible floods. Thousands of people were stranded – cut off by the floodwater – and lost their homes and possessions.

In Maputo, the capital, a home that looks after orphans and girls in need was badly flooded. Luckily the girls who live there escaped to a nearby centre, built on higher ground, where other neighbours were sheltering. Everybody had to work together to spread sand into the watery areas where dangerous mosquitoes would breed if they were left. One neighbour collected sacks of clothing for the girls, and they passed on what they could to other flood refugees who were even worse off.

Thousands of people in Mozambique had to live in temporary camps for a long time and a lot of the country was flooded for months. Christian Aid was able to give out emergency kits to people straight away, but the rebuilding work has taken a long time.
